Starting A Home Based Business - What To Look For

So you want to start a home based business, but you don't know where to begin.

Many people face this dilemma, but making money online is easier than you think.  Most people never try because they think it's either going to be too hard or too expensive.  But in reality it's one of the quickest and easiest ways to generate an income and what's more, you can get started without spending a fortune.

Most people who contemplate starting a home based business either want or need to do so for very little cost.  Many will also want to continue in their day job while they decide if a home based business is right for them.

So, whether you are seeking a full-time income or just need to supplement your existing income, taking a cautious approach and testing the waters before giving up your day job, is always a good idea.

The best way to do this is to start small and build your way up.  Don't just jump head first into one of the many costly programs that are out there.  Nine times out of ten, these only work for experienced marketers.

If you seriously want to earn an income from home then don't let yourself fall victim to the "hype" and don't waste your hard earned money on the promise of becoming rich beyond your wildest dreams.  There are no "get rich quick" schemes that work.  If it sounds too good to be true then it probably is.

Don't let your desire to be your own boss cloud your judgement when it comes to finding a home based business.  Apply some logic.  Give yourself a reality check. Ask yourself the following:

• Are they using fear to entice you to buy?
• Is the program just a glorified MLM pyramid scheme, reliant on the never-ending recruitment of people?
• Are you required to resell a program rather than a real product?
• Are they offering multiple income streams which will dilute your focus?
• Are they promising you don't have to do any work?
• Are they promising mega riches in mega short time?

If you can answer yes to any of the above, then DON'T DO IT!

So what do you do?

The first thing you should do is decide on the basics.  Run through the fundamental 5 W's (and an H). This will then help you to make a choice on what sort of business you should start and how you should go about it.

Why?

Why do you want to start a home based business?  Is it so you can leave your job; is it so you can earn more money; is it so you can spend more time with your family?  If your motivation is strong enough, it will help you to make the right choices for the right reasons.

When?

When can you work on your business?  Can you work part time or full time, evenings or mornings, weekdays or weekends?  Knowing when you can work on your business will help you to stay realistic about how quickly you can achieve your goals and will also help you to determine what sort of business you should contemplate.

Where?

Where do you want to run your business from?  Obviously to start out, you want to run it from home.  But, do you want to run it online or offline; can you dedicate some "home space" as an office, or maybe even for holding stock?  Understanding this will help you to determine the type of product you should start with.

Who?

Who do you want to sell your product or service to?  Do  you want to sell to people worldwide, nationwide or locally; do you want to sell to a specific age group or gender; do you want to sell to everyone or to a specific targeted group?  Understanding this will again help you to identify the type of product to fit the market you are going after.

How?

How much money can you afford to put into the business?  This is a biggie.  Determine how much you can spend in order to achieve your goal.  This could be an exact figure or a range within which you feel comfortable. Once you understand the costs involved in the business you have chosen, you MUST set yourself a budget and stick to it.

What?

What sort of business should you start?  Should it be online or offline; should it be a service or a product; should it be something you make yourself or onsell from others?  Does it meet your Why, When, Where, Who, How criteria?

The What? is for many people, the trickiest part,  but it doesn't have to be.  Here is one great idea to get you started.
